Do you ever look around at your home and just marvel (or shudder) at how the smallest member of your family seems to accumulate the most stuff?! No, just me?

Up until recently, it seemed like everywhere I would turn there were toy cars and animals and Duplos and books and baby dolls and... it was overwhelming!

Perhaps even more baffling was how my little one could ignore the floor covered in objects designed for her amusement and instead find great interest in chewing on paper or throwing my picture frames on the floor.

I had been overwhelmed by the "toy takeover" for some time, so in an effort to minimize the clutter AND to keep M more engaged in the toys she has, we have started practicing a daily toy rotation!

Budget Meal Planning at Sprouts

Motherhood, what a glorious career.
It's the hardest job there is, but it's also the most rewarding. I never imagined all of the roles I would play on a daily basis : housekeeper, personal chef, head cheerleader, janitor, teacher, nurse, storyteller, mediator, hair stylist, taxi driver, and of course finance manager.

I KNOW how tough it can be to meal plan on a budget, and if you're at all like me, meal planning isn't really one of your favorite things to do as it is. But, it is necessary!

Here are my top 3 tips for eating healthy on a budget, PLUS a meal plan I created using this week's Sprouts ad that incorporates the Portion Fix® containers. Enjoy!

Healthy Eating On A Budget Tips:

  1. Plan and prep meals ahead.
    Prepping your food in advance is one of the best things you can do for your health & fitness goals! Seriously, abs are made in the kitchen. When you've got a plan and something easy to reheat or quick to whip up, you're much less likely to hit up the drive-thru or to order delivery. Plus, it's also a great way to make sure that you're eating what's in the fridge instead of letting it rot and go to waste. (yeah, I've been there...good intentions gone all wrong.)
     
  2. Look for sales and plan your meals around them.
    Check the weekly ad for the stores that you shop at. Rather than shopping for groceries based on your weekly meal plan, plan your meals around what's on sale! This saves a TON and forces you to get creative. Don't be afraid to try new things!

    Sprouts even has Double Ad Wednesdays! Their weekly ad prices run from Wednesday to Wednesday, so you can save the most in the middle of the week when the ads overlap--twice the savings! Boom.
    Also, I didn't use this for this trip, but I just discovered that they have mobile app that you can add coupons to to scan at checkout and save even more!!
     
  3. Buy fresh produce when it's in season.
    Don't get me wrong, fresh produce is always great, but the cost can add up quickly AND it just tastes better when it's in season. My advice: stick with buying only what's in season and consider stocking up when you find a good deal. Produce freezes well, so if you're not going to use it all for your plan that week, freeze it and have really tasty (cheap) produce for several months!

A few notes:
-
My total bill at Sprouts was $66.54
-I already had 1 lb ground turkey, turkey lunch meat, Shakeology, nut butter, frozen berries, bananas, and the ingredients for the Core De Force steak salad (4 oz flank steak, 1 cup kale, jicama, 1 fresh mango) in the fridge.
-I left Sunday open for leftovers & trips to Radio for tacos, but I'll still have my Shakeology.
-My family consists of my husband, myself, and our 1.5 year old daughter.
-The meal plan lists the container counts for just one person.
-Each of the recipes makes quite a bit, so you will have some leftovers!
Egg Cups-6 servings (2 muffins each)
Spaghetti-5 servings
Mexican Chicken Zucchini Boats-8 servings
Salsa Chicken-4 servings
